Preprinted & Stamped Autographs: How to Tell Ink From Print
How preprinted and stamped autographs are made, why they aren't authentic signatures, and simple checks collectors can use to tell real ink from print.

A preprinted autograph is a signature reproduced as part of the printing process — on a photo, poster, card or program. A stamped autograph is applied with a rubber or self-inking stamp. Both are reproductions, not hand-signed autographs, and both are regularly sold as the real thing.
Why preprints fool people
Many official photos and posters come with the signature already printed on them. Once framed behind glass or photographed for a listing, it can be hard to tell the difference. Stamps can look convincing too, especially in a quick glance.
Simple checks you can do
Real ink sits on top of the surface and catches light differently from the rest of the image. Print is part of the image itself.
- Tilt it under light — real ink usually shows a different sheen
- Use a magnifier — print shows tiny dot patterns, ink shows solid lines
- Look for indentation from pen pressure on paper
- Check whether the signature continues smoothly over the image or is part of it
- Stamps often show even, flat ink with crisp but slightly blotchy edges
When to get an expert review
If an item is framed, slabbed, or listed only with photos, you may not be able to check it yourself. That's when an expert review protects you before you buy.
Preprint & stamp checklist
- The signature has the same sheen as the photo
- Dot patterns visible under magnification
- No pen indentation on paper items
- Identical signatures on multiple copies of the same item
- Flat, uniform ink with stamp-like edges
Questions collectors ask
Is a preprinted signature worth anything?+
As an autograph, no — it's part of the print. The item may still have value as memorabilia, but not as a signed piece.
How can I tell from an online listing?+
Ask for angled, close-up photos of the signature in good light. If the seller can't provide them, have the item reviewed before you buy.
Can MAS check a framed item?+
Yes. Send clear, angled photos through Instant Verification; experts can often identify print versus ink from good images.
