How to Authenticate Comic Book Autographs

A comic collector's guide to authenticating signed comics: creator and cover-artist signatures, remarks and sketches, witnessed convention signings, and red flags before you buy.

By the MAS Certified authentication team · Updated October 2026

Signed comics are usually created at conventions, which makes them perfect for witnessed authentication — and a target for forgers when they weren't. Creators sign hundreds of books in a weekend, and their signatures change with the pace, the pen and the decade.

Creators, cover artists and celebrities

A comic can be signed by its writer, interior artist, cover artist, or an actor tied to the character. Each signer has their own habits, and many creators have signed so often that their signature has become a fast shorthand. Authenticators compare against examples from the same period and the same type of event.

Remarks and sketches

Many artists add a small drawing, called a remark or sketch, next to their signature. These add value and are harder to fake convincingly, but they're also copied. Line confidence, shading habits and the artist's usual character choices all matter.

Why witnessed signings matter so much for comics

Because most comic signatures happen face-to-face at shows, a witnessed certificate from the signing is the gold standard. When a book is certified on the spot, there's no question about who signed it. Books without that record rely on expert comparison.

Comic book red flags

  • A signature with no witness record from a creator who rarely signs
  • Ink that looks traced or uneven on a glossy cover
  • Remarks drawn with hesitant, sketchy linework
  • A signature date that doesn't fit when the book was published
  • Lots of the same rare creator from a single seller
  • Generic certificates that can't be looked up online

Questions collectors ask

Does a signed comic need to be witnessed?+

It doesn't have to be, but witnessed books carry the strongest assurance and are often easiest to resell. Unwitnessed books can still be authenticated by expert comparison.

Can MAS authenticate a comic that's already slabbed?+

Yes. Send clear photos of the signature through Instant Verification for an expert opinion; experts can review the signature through the holder.

Does a remark or sketch change the value?+

Usually it adds value, because it's a unique, hand-drawn addition by the artist. It should be authenticated just like the signature.
